Anyone Can Be an Athlete.
Anyone Can Be an Athlete.
Sports are not only fun, entertaining, and healthy, but they also serve as a connection that brings people together. Just like any other area of life, sports are something that should be more inclusive, not exclusive. Whether it be a team sport or an individual physical activity, just moving your body has endless rewarding benefits towards any individual.
How to Get Involved in More Athletic Activities as a Person with IDD
As much as there are lots of athletic organizations that are not the most accommodating towards every one's unique needs, there are also plenty that offer accessibility towards a variety of individuals. For example, recently a student with Down Syndrome had their hopes set on competing in a triathlon. His parents were aware of an upcoming youth triathlon event, but they were not sure how accommodating the company would be. The eager student was confident in the swimming and running portions, however he could not ride a bicycle on his own to complete the biking portion. Determined to help the student compete regardless of his ability to ride a bicycle, the student's family contacted the triathlon company and explained the situation. The company instantly responded with a solution: they sent the family a free tandem bike so that the student could participate! With the biking predicament solved, the student was able to finally achieve his dream of being a triathlete.
YLC Blogs shares this story to remind everyone that any dream is attainable. One's success as an athlete is not determined by their skill set, but rather their mindset. There are many opportunities out there for individuals with IDD to participate in athletics other than the Special Olympics events. For example, many gyms offer personal training and fitness classes to all individuals. Even if the activity you are interested in does not have accommodating resources, don't hesitate to reach out and ask! As suggested by the young triathlete's story above, you never know how a company, organization, or team can help, so it does not ever hurt to ask. Creating a more inclusive athletic sector starts with you and your drive to reach out!
