Navigating Finals Season

 Navigating Finals Season

As midterms and finals creep up on students across schools, the first half of December can be a stressful time for many. Constant testing may be overwhelming, however, it is important to properly manage your stress levels and prioritize your mental health during these times. Down below, the YLC offers plenty of tips in several different point of views to help you tackle this year's finals season in the best way possible!

POV: Students

Once December rolls around, most students across middle schools, high schools, and college are all prepping for their upcoming exams. This is a time consuming period for students, as they are reviewing content from the entire semester for their tests. Instead of spending hours and hours back to back cramming for an exam, it is more productive to study for shorter periods of time and take small breaks in between. For example, study consistently for an hour and half to two hours, then take a thirty minute break to clear your head. In that time, grab a snack, stretch your body, or FaceTime your buddy! Also, to avoid overwhelming your brain with information, study only relevant content from the semester rather than concentrating too much on minor details. Additionally, don't forget to rest! Instead of pulling constant all nighters, make sure to sleep early before your exams to be well rested and have a clear mind going into the test. Finally, after your exams pass make some time for yourself and also reach out to your buddy to resume plans over break!

POV: Chapter Leaders

When scheduling events in December, as an officer it is important to consider the academic responsibilities of your members. Avoid planning a big social in the middle of finals week. Instead, try to pick a calmer day in December to host a holiday social. Additionally, as an officer team, consider getting your advisor a surprise holiday gift! Advisors do so much for your chapter, so get them a little something to show your chapter's appreciation towards them! The best way to get a gift is for everyone to pitch in, so have each of your officers contribute $5 or each member contribute $1 to fund a present. Happy planning!

POV: Non-Student Best Buddies Members

If you are a member in Best Buddies who is not currently attending school, then lucky you - you don't have to worry about any final exams! However, it is still important for you to be considerate of other members who may be testing at this time of year. Your buddy or fellow members may not be available to make plans leading up to finals week, so try to see them either before or after. Also, your fellow student Best Buddies members are probably a little overwhelmed right now, so send them a sweet, encouraging text or a small holiday gift. Remember, even if you are not a student, you can still participate in the making this year's final exam season better!
