Tornado Safety Tips
With devastating environmental events such as the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, it is becoming increasingly important to take caution before and during emergency weather. Such events can take place in all climates across the world, ranging from winter storms to summer hurricanes to even monsoons. In this blog, we would like to bring awareness to one form of natural disaster--tornadoes. As someone who lives in the Midwest where tornadoes are sometimes present, here is my advice on what to do in a tornado.
1. If there is bad weather coming, seek shelter as soon as possible. Usually the best place to move to is an underground shelter, basement, or safe room.
2. Grab blankets, pillows, shoes, and a first aid kit. These items will help in you in the case that somebody near you gets injured or needs assistance.
3. Stay close to your family and any pets. Staying near your loved ones or within a group is one of the most important things to do in an emergency weather event.
4. Listen to the news and radio. By staying updated with the news, you can remain informed on the areas where the tornado may be impacting and learn any additional emergency procedures. Be alert to any emergency notifications sent by the National Weather Service on your device. If possible, plan ahead to avoid future danger.
5. Grab some snacks, board games, or other items that may relax you. After prioritizing your physical safety, also check in with your mental wellbeing in this moment of turbulence. Consider chatting with people nearby, if possible, to remain calm.
6. Make sure you have a plan of where to meet after the storm if something happens or if you are separated from your family. If power remains in your area, reach out to your loved ones by phone call or text to make sure they are safe after the storm.
7. Stay away from windows and doors. In a worst case scenario, your window or door might be broken by the strong winds of the tornado. By hiding in a place lower in altitude and without windows or doors, you can maximize the safety of you and your loved ones.
In today's world, it is always smart to stay on top of the weather, whether it be through a trusted online source or by word of mouth. In addition to these tips, be sure to stay updated with the National Weather Service or your local media. In an emergency, call 911.
