Celebrating 3/21
Celebrating 3/21 World Down Syndrome Day
What is 3/21 ?
March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day to recognize and celebrate individuals with Down Syndrome world wide.
Why is it celebrated specifically on March 21st?
Individuals with Down Syndrome have a three copies of the 21st chromosome. For that reason, it is celebrated on March 21st to honor this phenomenon.
What is the theme of World Down Syndrome Day?
The theme of World Down Syndrome Day is wearing crazy socks.
Why!?
Medical professionals compare the shape of chromosomes in the human body to look like a sock shape. For that reason, the sock theme was adopted. To celebrate, participants wear crazy socks in order to spread awareness and showcase each one of our uniqueness. Many people in schools, the workplace, and the community wear socks to stand up for this amazing cause.
What can you do?
Spread awareness! This can look like a lot of different things. To start off, you can wear crazy socks as mentioned above. Additionally, try to get your community or school involved in this initiative as well. Announce to your chapter or school about 3/21 and get them to participate. You can also advocate by spreading knowledge. Have your school make an announcement about 3/21 or try to get it posted on a campus/ community social media account. To add on, you can also post about 3/21 or post your socks in order to highlight cause.
Be creative!
Try to get as many people as possible involved in celebrating 3/21! You can create fun activities for those around you to recognize this special day. For example, 21 Challenges are popular. These can be anything from perform 21 push ups for 3/21 or collect 21 signatures of people you spread awareness too! Again, be as creative as you can be with this.
Celebrating March 21st is a great way for the world to celebrate its differences and each and every person that makes it a better place. 3/21/23 was an amazing one and hopefully it can continue to expand in the next ones too!
In Friendship,
