Spread the Word to End the Word 2023

Spread the Word to End the Word is an annual worldwide event that means so much to people with different abilities. Founded by the Spread the Word: Inclusion Campaign, this event encourages people to be more inclusive and pledge to not say the R-word. This year, the theme is Going All In(clusive) to represent that everyone should go "all in" to practice inclusion in their daily lives.

The R-word is a form of hate speech that stands for "retard." It first started as a word related to science. But then it became a highly offensive word used to make others feel horrible about themselves. Growing up, I was called this word by many people. It made me feel less than I was. This word continues to hurt so many people today.

I think that sometimes people use the R-word and don't think anything of it. They may say the word with little regard or knowledge about the pain it truly causes people. People may also be influenced by friends or others who use the R-word. This cycle needs to end so that we can be more inclusive and kind to one another.

I pledge to stop using the R-word for many reasons. I encourage others to do so as well in their lives. There are so many other kind words that can be used to positively describe a person. For example, you could use the words "caring," "helpful," or "funny." Whatever word you use, it should be intended to uplift somebody rather than bringing them down.

Remember that inclusion starts with you and your everyday choices. Sign the official Pledge to Spread Inclusion using the link below!
